Climate Change: Bike More and Drive Less to Curtail Air Pollution - Enyinna Victor

Climate Change without doubt in the 21st Century is seen as an undeniable environmental threat.

The World at Large today is experiencing and seeking approaches to adapt and reduce it's negative impact.

Climatic changes as we experience now, was caused generally out of man's desire for growth, development and improvement of Earth better than they meet it. Through Industrialization, Infrastructural advancement and oftentimes careless attitude of man towards his environment, Man tends to cause more harm than the intended good causing environmental pollution in the process.

Environmental Pollution which in form of:

(1) Air.  (2) Water.  (3) Land.  (4) Radioactive Thermal.  (5) Light.  (6) Sound Pollution.

Air Pollution:

Air Pollution can be explained as the contamination of natural air due to it's mixture with harmful substances in form of gases from both human and natural sources all going into the atmosphere. (ie. Air Pollution has occurred when there is high presence of hazardous substances in the atmosphere making it unhabitable for living things including Man and Animals.

The increased presence of harmful gaseous substances in the atmosphere is air pollution.

Causes of Air Pollution:

Generally Causes of Air Pollution could be classified into Five. Namely:

1. Mobile Agents: from the transportation sector (ie) Cars, Buses, Trucks, Heavy Duty Machines like Cranes, Trains, Planes and Ships, etc. They come as vehicle exhaust fumes.

2. Stationary Agents: Seen as Exhaust from Industrial Plants, Fossil fuel Power Plants, Oil Refineries, Factories, etc.

3. Area Causing Agents: from Agricultural Activities, Cities, Markets, Construction activities such as Demolition, and Wood burning fire places.

4. Natural Causing Agents: Wind blown dust, Wildfires, Volcanoes, etc.

5. Household Causing Agents: Kitchen Waste, Dumpsites, and Open Burning of Garbages.

Control of Air Pollution:

a. Governments:

1. Enact policies that encourages Mass Transit over Private Transit to reduce the number vehicles plying the road. Again this policy will bring about rapid traffic flow, durability of roads, etc.

2. Site Industrial area far away from Residential areas.

3. Ensure Afforestation (Planting of Trees) over Deforestation (Cutting down of Trees).

4. Should set up committees to check compliance to removal of worm out vehicles from the road.

5. Should make sure that construction sites are highly secure and that heavy construction works are done according to international standards.

6. Ensure recycling and reusing of wastes instead of having Dumpsites. Also recycling and reusing of wastes will create more jobs and grow the economy if properly harnessed.

b. Individuals:

1. Knowing the effect of living in air pollution environment, individuals should ensure riding bikes over driving petrol or diesel powered vehicles. Such increases life span, as riding bikes is an exercising activity.

2. Follow and comply with the above government policies when roll out or enacted.

3. Ensure proper refuse disposal.

4. Reduce or totally incessant burning of brushes. Etc.
