DEFINTION OF COLOUR

1] Colour is a universal language and a powerful communication tool of all the elements that make up a visual design. Colour is perhaps the most vital and influential. Research conducted by psychologist and marketers have highlighted how colours can influence our emotions and perceptions. Colour schemes are often used to place emphasis on particular aspects of a design or to evoke a desired mood or emotions in the viewer.

Designers use colours selectively to create harmony, balance and consistency.

2] Colours could also be defined as the visual perceptual property deriving from the spectrum of interacting with the photoreceptor cells of the eyes

3] Colour in other terms could simply be what the eye sees when light is reflected on an object. 

The science of colour is sometimes called Chromatics. Colorimetry is in most case simply referred to a colour science that includes the perception of colour by the human eye and brain with the origin of colours in materials.

Colour categories and physical specification of colour are associated with objects or materials based on their physical properties such as light absorption, reflection or emission spectra.

PROPERTIES OF COLOURS

HUE: This is simply the property of light by which objects are classified [i.e] The name of a colour. Examples: Orange, Black, Red, Blue, etc.

VALUE: This is the lightness of a hue [colour]. The value of hue in most cases could be changed with the addition of neutral colours like black or white.

INTENSITY: This is the sharpness, brightest or dullness of a hue[colour]. Oftentimes; Pure Hue- have high intensity. While Dull Hue – are of low intensity.

COLOUR WHEEL: This is the spectrum bent into a circle. It is a useful tool for organizing colours. Colour wheel indicates Primary, Secondary, Complimentary and Intermediate colours.

TYPES OF COLOURS

This article have outlined seven [7] different types of colours.

1] PRIMARY COLOURS:  These are the original colours [Hues] which can be mixed in different forms to get or create other colours, they ae generally known as the basic colours. They include: Red, Blue and Yellow.

2] SECONDARY COLOURS: These are hues [colours] created from the mixture of two or more primary colours. they are colours between primary hues on the colour wheel. They include: Green, Orange, Violet, etc. 

Example of how Secondary Colours are created; 

A] To get the colour Green – you mix equal parts of blue and yellow. B] To get Orange – You mix equal parts of Red and Yellow. C] To get Violet – You mix equal parts of Red and Blue, etc.

3] COMPLIMENTARY COLOURS: They are colours that cut across each other in the colour wheel. They include; Violet, Yellow, Blue, Orange, Red, Green, etc.

4] INTERMEDIATE COLOURS: These are colours created by mixing a Secondary colour with a Primary colour at different variation or ratio. They include; Red – Orange, Red – Violet, Blue – Violet, Blue – Green, Yellow – Green, Yellow – Orange, etc.

5] WARM COLOURS: These are colours of fire, fall leaves, sunset and sunrise. They express warmth feelings and are generally energizing passionate and positive. Examples of warm colours are; Red, Orange & Yellow.

6] COOL COLOURS: Unlike the warm colours, cool colours have the special feel of being cold and cool. They are colours of night, nature, water and are usually calming, relaxing and somewhat reserved. Examples of cool colours are; Green, Blue and Purple.

7] NEUTRAL COLOURS: As the name implies they are neutral and are seen as matching colours to any kind of colour combination. They also are commonly used with brighter accent colours. Examples of Neutral colours are; Black and White.

MEANING OF COLOURS, BRAND USE AND THEIR CODE NAMES

The biggest power behind colours is their ability to evoke emotions and make people feel things. Colours often have different interpretation, where different brands use them to symbolize different things.
